WHO began when our Constitution came into force on 7 April 1948 – a date we now celebrate every year as World Health Day. We are now more than 7000 people working in 150 country offices, in 6 regional offices and at our headquarters in Geneva.
Our primary role is to direct and coordinate international health within the United Nations’ system.
These are our main areas of work:
Health systems
Promoting health through the life-course
Noncommunicable diseases
Communicable diseases
Corporate services
Preparedness, surveillance and response.
In 2010 IFC worked closely with Good Cause Communications to draft WHO’s Global Resource Mobilization & Communications strategy. We interviewed staff across all relevant departments in Geneva as well as those involved in regional and national activity, in half-a-dozen visits.
Comparative UN organisations were researched and country data developed to back our extensive and far reaching recommendations for an integrated fundraising strategy and the development of critical new revenue streams. The change management process was also outlined and the necessary internal and external communications processes made clear.
This initial draft was then presented to some 40 staff from the length and breadth of WHO, discussion groups were held on key aspects and a revised document produced to meet the key comments. WHO was then fully equipped to begin an extensive process of implementation.
