Burma Star Memorial Fund

Advising on fundraising strategy and hands-on support as the organisation entered a new phase.

About the Burma Star Memorial Fund

The Burma Star Memorial Fund was founded by the Burma Star Association, to keep the memory of the Burma Campaign during the 2nd World War alive. The story of the 14th Army, which included a million men from more than 20 nations, is an incredible one, but so little known that they are frequently referred to as the Forgotten Army. The long, hard, heroic slog of the Burma Campaign was overlooked at the time and is still very much in the shadow of the better-known campaigns fought in Europe, Africa and elsewhere.

What we did for them

We were asked to advise the Fund on its strategy, as it moved from providing care for the veterans of the 14th Army, to memorialising the Burma Campaign. They planned to achieve this through two projects; an online archive and a scholarship fund, open to young people from any of the nations fighting in the 14 Army.

We developed a strategy for the organisation, based on approaching those whose family had fought with the 14th Army, or who were otherwise interested in the campaign. One of our consultants then became embedded with the organisation for 2 years, to deliver the new online archive and develop their fundraising. This culminated in a reception at St James’ Palace hosted by the Fund’s Royal Patron, HRH the Prince of Wales.

“The International Fundraising Consultancy’s work has been invaluable in helping us to reach a position where The Burma Star Memorial Fund can carry on the legacy of remembering those who served in the Burma Campaign when the Burma Star Association closes on VJ Day 2020. Under their guidance, the Memorial Fund has established a scholarship programme, set up an online archive of our most treasured records and documents and developed a fundraising appeal. This will take us forward as a strong organisation with the right vehicles in place to ensure the extraordinary achievements of those who served in the 14th Army will not be forgotten. ”

The Viscount Slim, Chairman of the Burma Star Memorial Fund, Burma Star Memorial Fund
