About Alton College
Alton College is a sixth form college located in Alton, Hampshire, England. As well as being a sixth form, the college provides an adult education service to the local population as well as catering for students with disabilities from nearby Treloar College.
It was built in 1978 and was one of the first institutions in the UK to be a purpose-built sixth form college.
What we did for them
A few years ago the Learning and Skills Council ran out of money part way through their grant programme. Alton College, Alton, Hampshire which is a new purpose built Six-Form College with exceptional Ofsted reports was left with a half-built engineering block.
IFC wrote a classic feasibility study to test if there was sufficient potential income available for a capital appeal to raise the £2.5m required before the structure decayed too far for the building to be completed without starting completely from scratch.
We researched the likely donations from grant making agencies, the possibility of company income and the wealthy people who had a relationship with the college’s catchment area, education and engineering. We listed all these sources contact details, the reason we had selected them and the wealth of the rich individuals. We also produced a strategy and best practice action plan to achieve that strategy and raise the funds before the tight deadline.
In November 2013 IFC were invited back to the official opening of Alton College’s new Engineering Centre. The building was opened by Lord Robert Winston, who has been a great champion for the project.
“Fundraising is a new area of activity for Alton College and the support and advice from IFC for our £3.1m capital campaign has been invaluable, right from feasibility study through to successful conclusion of the campaign. The expertise of John Baguley and Bill King along with other IFC associates has helped the College meet the fundraising target to enable us to construct a world-class engineering and design technology centre.”
