June’s First Friday: Milan

building copyDue to a national holiday in Italy, IFC Italy’s next First Friday Fundraisers advice session in Milan has been moved to Friday 10th June, from 5-7pm at Avanzi. Francesca Mineo, IFC Italy’s director, will welcome Licia Casamassima, head of high value partnerships at Action Against Hunger Italy. The session will focus on corporate giving and the possible alliances between proft and non profits. We caught up with Licia ahead of the session:

Where does your passion for corporate giving and big donors come from?

My professional background is in the profit sector: I worked for 12 years in finance as a manager of investment funds in emerging countries, but it has never been “my” place. I studied political economy, I took a Masters degree in development economics, but I have always been passionate about cooperation, development, and inter-culture. As soon as I could, after two sons and an ‘almost’ second degree in anthropology, I chose a job for which I felt fully satisfied: fundraising, and working in the third sector seemed to be a good opportunity, as my core specialities could well be a plus.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced as a fundraiser?

In my opinion the most challenging goal for a fundraiser comes from within an organisation: it is always a challenge to integrate core activities with fundraising, to work as a team, to promote innovation and to be open to new opportunities. We have to break the mold! Sometimes for non profits it is hard to consider fundraising as an investment (but a cost), to think about the donors as partners and not just as “cash”. On the other hand, working with companies, it is important to engage them to be perceived as a partner and not as a mere recipient of funds. Nice job to do on both counts, whatever people may say!

During the next First Friday in Milan, you will also talk about your experience in international organisation, Action Against Hunger Italy. What advice would you give to fundraisers, specially for those working for national or local non profits?

Everyone has to start from his or her own identity and experience, from one’s own network. There is wealth, and there are opportunities that can be seized upon and upon which to start to build. A few key points to consider: to stand out, capitalise experiences, build relationships, think about win-win partnerships where we receive & give as well. Last but not least: never forget about your communication, which should be as integrated and effective as possible.
